We should have all of our parenting books processed by the weekend. There is perhaps no more reliable source of information about attachmentparenting and general infant and child healthcare than the works of William and MarthaSears. For those of you who are unfamiliar with their work, they have for many yearswritten on empowering parents to raise their children with emotional closeness andsecurity while providing both the perspectives of the medical professional of whichthey are members (he is a doctor, she is a nurse) and that of the parents of many children(I have lost count of how many children they have). If you have any questions aboutwhich book might best suit your particular needs, please feel free to e-mail me forsuggestions. THE BIRTH BOOK: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOWTO HAVE A SAFE AND SATISFYING BIRTH BY WILLIAM SEARS, M.D. AND MARTHA SEARS, R.N. $13.95 Paperback THE BABY BOOK: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOWABOUT YOUR BABY FROM BIRTH TO AGE TWO BY WILLIAM SEARS, M.D. AND MARTHA SEARS, R.N. $21.95 Paperback. THE FUSSY BABY:HOW TO BRING OUT THE BEST INYOUR HIGH NEED CHILD BY WILLIAM SEARS, M.D. $5.99 Paperback THE DISCIPLINE BOOK:EVERYTHING YOU NEED TOKNOW TO HAVE A BETTER-BEHAVED CHILD - FROM BIRTH TO AGE TEN BY WILLIAM SEARS AND MARTHA SEARS $13.95 I carried this book around as my bible for a few months (it may have prevented mayscreaming bouts with my then three year old). While it addresses"discipline" from birth, more accurately it explains why the issue of"discipline" or more appropriately, the making of boundaries, is not an issueneeding to be addressed in infants. It is comforting to brush away the culturalpressures with an understanding that the cognitive ability to even attempt manipulationdoesn't develop until much later. Than the book contains some very helpful approaches to the toddler and older child in need of boundary setting in a loving andeffective way without intimidation or violence. Paperback NIGHTTIME PARENTING:HOW TO GET YOUR BABY ANDCHILD TO SLEEP BY WILLIAM SEARS, M.D. 11.95 The book can be a real lifesaver. Just when you think that no other child in theworld can be more difficult at night, you can have all the sleep stages and idiosyncrasieswhich exist in so many children explained to you. It is also great ammunition ifthose around you are encouraging you to let a baby "cry it out" and this is notthe way you wish to comfort your child. I read this book several time with my firstson and felt better every time - both about the fact that he would outgrow much of the difficulty (and he has) and that my instincts were to be trusted. Paperback.
GROWING TOGETHER:A PARENTS GUIDE TO BABY'S FIRST YEAR BY WILLIAM SEARS $14.95 This is a more personal book than more of those by Sears. It is really the firstyears in the life of one of their own children and the bulk of the anecdotes and photosare of their own family. The book still retains its authoritative usefulness but yetis also a delightful look into the inner workings of a real family. Paperback. WELCOME TO THE WORLD: A CELEBRATION OF BIRTHAND BABIES FROM MANY CULTURES COMPILED BY NIKKI SIEGEN-SMITH $17.95 A lovely book of poetry and photography about the experience ofmotherhood accompany some of the most beautiful photos of mothers and babies I have everseen. There a several unforgettable nursing shots. [hardcover] NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHS BY HOWARD SCHATZ 14.95 An extraordinary book of photographs of newborn babies. Schatzcaptures both their beauty and the range of personalities in the tiniest of infants. [hardcover] |
